GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The attorney for a North Carolina woman accused of killing her son in 2000 says she should have the murder charge against her dismissed because she’s so mentally ill than she will never be competent to stand trial.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville reports 42-year-old Mirna Aguirre-Palma has been treated for mental illness since her son was found at their Pitt County home on Nov. 21, 2000. Attorney Les Robinson said Aguirre-Palma suffocated her son, put him in a bathtub and mutilated his body.

Forensic psychologist LaVonne Fox told a hearing on Thursday that doctors who treated and evaluated Aguirre-Palma agree that she is not competent to assist in her defense in a reasonable and rational manner.

A judge said he would review the reports and issue his finding later.
