VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Police say a Mississippi man is charged with robbing a priest who had helped him.
The Vicksburg Post reports that 52-year-old Thomas Lee Jiles of Yazoo is charged with armed robbery. He was being held Wednesday in the Warren County Jail.
Police Sgt. Johnnie Edwards says the robbery happened Monday night outside St. Paul Catholic Church in downtown Vicksburg and the priest, the Rev. Tom Lalor, was not injured.
Edwards says Jiles had approached Lalor earlier Monday asking for money to travel from Vicksburg to Yazoo City. Lalor paid for a hotel room for Jiles.
After the priest returned to the church, Jiles jumped out of some shrubbery with a brick, demanded $100 and threatened to kill Lalor if he didn’t provide the money.
It was not immediately clear whether Jiles has an attorney.
