PHOENIX (AP) - It’s still unclear what caused the death of a Phoenix police dog sent into a home to force the surrender of suspect who was the subject of a pursuit.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton says Bane, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, “died protecting his fellow officers and our city.”

Police say 27-year-old Jairo Adair Contreras Quinter entered the home Tuesday after abandoning a stolen car while a 24-year-old female passenger was taken into custody outside the house.

They say Quinter is being held on suspicion of armed robbery, theft of motor vehicle, burglary, unlawful flight from law enforcement vehicle, a weapons violation, intentional mistreatment of an animal and other charges.

Laura Dagnino is jailed on suspicion of armed robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and an outstanding warrant for drug charges.
