BANGOR, Maine (AP) - Some Maine residents are up in arms over a state ferry service hike that has more than doubled the price of a ticket.
The Bangor Daily News reports the increase that goes into effect May 21 sets the standard price for the entire system at $11 for a round-trip adult ticket and $30 for a person with a vehicle.
That is a jump for Islesboro residents, who currently pay $5.50 for an adult ticket and $13.75 with a car. Tori Coombs takes the ferry from Islesboro daily and she says “we are furious.”
More remote islands such as Matinicus will see their round-trip fare drop from $33 for a ticket and $86 for bringing a car.
The state says a flat rate will improve customer service across the system.
