BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has admitted to fatally shooting a University of Vermont student in a dispute over money.

WCAX-TV reports that Richard Monroe faces a 25-year prison sentence after reaching a plea deal.

The 25-year-old Monroe admitted Wednesday in federal court to killing Kevin DeOliveira. The incident occurred at DeOliveira’s apartment in January 2015 in what prosecutors say was a dispute over money.

DeOliveira was found dead in his apartment by friends the following day. The former UVM student was 23.

Monroe initially pleaded not guilty in June of last year after being arrested in Texas. WCAX-TV reported he was also charged with crimes related to cocaine trafficking and robbery.
