TUSCUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Central Missouri officials say a Miller County Sheriff’s deputy has died in a crash while responding to a 911 call.
The Kansas City Star reports that 26-year-old Casey Shoemate was driving his squad car Friday night with the emergency lights and sirens on and was attempting to pass a firetruck in a no-passing area when he hit another vehicle head-on.
Shoemate was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, 65-year-old Robert Levin of Florissant, was flown to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries.
Officials say Shoemate, who lived in Eldon, had been with the sheriff’s office for about a year.
