ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont man charged in the kidnapping and killing of a 78-year-old woman is cutting a deal with the prosecution days before his trial was set to begin.

Court records show a change of plea hearing for 37-year-old Keith Baird has been scheduled for Friday morning at the Caledonia County Courthouse in St. Johnsbury. The Caledonian-Record reports details of the agreement have not been made public.

The plea scheduling comes after the judge ruled against prosecutors trying to keep details of a plea deal secret. Baird’s attorney had said he believed the state needed the plea deal to put his client at the scene.

Prosecutors say Baird and two others entered Pat O’Hagan’s home with the intention of robbing her, but instead ended up kidnapping and killing the woman.
