PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a confrontation in the parking lot of a northern New Jersey restaurant ended with shots fired and two men hospitalized in critical condition.

Paterson police say the shooting was reported around 4 a.m. Friday. Responding officers did not find any victims at the scene, but they soon learned that two men had gone to a hospital to seek treatment for wounds they suffered in the confrontation.

The 25- and 27-year-old men both were identified only as Paterson residents, and they were listed in critical condition. Further details about the shooting and their injuries were not released.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
