MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Young hunters will try to get a turkey this weekend during the annual youth spring turkey hunt.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says last year Vermont hunters set a record for taking 6,599 turkeys in the spring youth weekend and the May seasons. The previous spring record was in 2013.

The youth hunters must be at least 15 years old and accompanied by an unarmed licensed adult.

They also must have completed a hunter education course and possess both a hunting and a turkey hunting license in addition to a free youth turkey hunting tag.

The department says permission from landowners is required to hunt on private land during the youth hunting weekend. Shooting hours are one half hour before sunrise to 5 p.m.
