PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Democrat Sandra Cano has won a special election for the Rhode Island senate.

Cano, an at-large Pawtucket city councilor, defeated Republican Nathan Luciano on Tuesday to fill the seat representing the city left vacant by Democrat James Doyle.

Doyle, who had held the seat since 2004, resigned in January to focus on his struggle with alcohol.

Cano says she was overwhelmed by the support of Pawtucket voters.

The Providence Journal reports Cano has backed a proposal to build a new stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox. The state is considering whether to provide public subsidies for the project.

Cano campaigned on bringing more state aid to Pawtucket’s schools and keeping property taxes down. She is expected to be sworn in later this month.
