FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a Washington state man has died following a standoff with police that lasted nearly 12 hours.

Authorities say the 36-year-old man and a woman were involved in a hit-and-run crash shortly before noon Wednesday in the city of Federal Way.

Federal Way police say the pair ran from the crash site and attempted to steal a car. The man then broke into a home as officers responded. The woman was arrested.

Officers ordered the man to exit the house but he refused. Police negotiators attempted to persuade the man to leave, but hours later a SWAT team entered the house.

Police say the man fired a gun and officer returned shots.

Federal Way police say it’s unclear if the man shot himself or was shot by officers.
