NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The president of Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island says she is stepping down.

Sister Jane Gerety announced Wednesday she is retiring from the Roman Catholic university in June 2019.

The 76-year-old Gerety became the university’s seventh president in July 2009. She has overseen the launch of a new doctorate program in nursing, a $26 million renovation of an academic building and the creation of a Warwick campus for working adults in graduate and continuing education.

Gerety says “this has been the best job in the world.”

The university’s board of trustees has formed a search committee for Gerety’s replacement, and she will work with them to ensure a smooth transition.
