SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California’s newest state senator will be in Sacramento for all of about three weeks and lose her new job by December.
Vanessa Delgado resigned as Montebello’s mayor Monday, moments before she was sworn in to fill the vacancy created when Tony Mendoza resigned in February over sexual misconduct allegations.
She will represent the district in Los Angeles and Orange counties only until December 3. In a strange twist, voters nominated a different Democrat, Bob Archuleta, to face Republican businesswoman Rita Topalian in the November election, ensuring that Delgado will soon be out of a job.
The Legislature adjourns for the year at the end of August.
Despite her brief term, Delgado says she looks forward to helping her constituents.
Delgado was accompanied by her family, including her 15-year-old daughter.
