OSSINING, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a roughly 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) retaining wall collapsed onto a commercial property in suburban New York and spurred the evacuation of some nearby apartments, but no injuries were reported.
The wall came down around 7:30 p.m. Monday on Main Street in Ossining. Neighbor Leah Schwartz tells News 12 Westchester she “heard a really loud crash and saw the whole wall just come crumbling down.”
Police Chief Kevin Sylvester tells The Journal News the rubble is covering a good portion of a construction business below the wall.
Meanwhile, residents were ordered to leave an apartment complex above it and some nearby homes while engineers assess whether those buildings are safe.
Officials are working to determine what caused the collapse and whether recent rains played a role.
