President Trump said Thursday that the economy would be worse off if he wasn’t in office.

“If I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash,” he said in an interview for Fox News, “I think everybody would be very poor.”

The president criticized his former campaign rival Hillary Clinton and said her tenure in the White House would have sparked “negative growth.”

The Commerce Department reported that the economy grew at an annual rate of 4.1 percent in the second quarter, in large part because of the president’s tax cuts. It had a 2.2 percent growth rate in the previous quarter.

When asked about potential Republican losses during the mid-term congressional elections, Mr. Trump brushed off concerns about impeachment proceedings.

“I don’t know how you can impeach somebody who’s done a great job,” he said.
