HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a driver was trapped in his car when power lines, poles and a transformer crashed down on a Long Island street.

The incident early Friday in Hicksville knocked out power to about 1,400 homes and businesses and forced the closure of the southbound lanes of South Broadway.

The downed transformer was leaking oil.

Firefighters say the trapped man was able to get out once power company PSEG Long Island determined the lines draping his car weren’t electrified.

Workers needed more than six hours to clean up the mess.
