TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in Alabama have identified a man found dead in a house fire that occurred during a standoff with police.

Gilbert County Coroner Justin Gasque told news outlets that 42-year-old Edward Howard died in the home in Tuscumbia on Dec. 3.

Gasque said he’s still trying to determine how Howard died. The coroner says it appears that Howard died in the fire but it could take months to get a full autopsy report.

Police were at the home to serve a drug arrest warrant on Howard, who barricaded himself inside the house. Police Chief Tony Logan said officers spent more than an hour talking to Howard. Logan said when negotiating didn’t work, the officers used tear gas into the home.

The police chief says a fire started in the home.
