NEW YORK (AP) - Restitution money is on the way to some former tenants of a major New York City landlord who was accused of bullying people out of rent-regulated apartments.
State Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced Thursday that first-round payments of $2,425 apiece are being mailed to Steven Croman’s ex-tenants.
Almost 800 households have applied. There are eligibility requirements.
Croman agreed to pay $8 million into a restitution fund as part of a settlement last year. The AG’s office had sued him, saying he harassed rent-stabilized tenants in hopes they’d leave and he could hike the price.
His company, 9300 Realty Inc., said Thursday it’s diligently implementing the agreement and focusing on “using best practices to provide quality housing.”
Under the settlement, an independent company is now managing over 100 Croman buildings.
