ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Improvements may soon be coming to Abbeville’s cobblestone square.

Abbeville City Manager Blake Stone told the City Council he is working on a proposal to replace the cobblestones after repeated repairs in recent years.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports that Stone thinks the repairs are happening because of problems with utility lines under the street.

Stone says he can’t estimate the cost yet, but repairs will cost more and take longer if there are problems with utility lines.

Stone says the cobblestone streets on the square last had a major renovation in 1982. He says a more permanent repair job would also save much of the up to $8,000 a year Abbeville is currently spending to maintain the cobblestones.
