MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Officials in Montpelier have given conditional approval to a proposed hotel and parking garage development.

The Times Argus reports the Development Review Board approved the project Thursday. The Bashara family is planning to build a $15 million, five story hotel along with a parking garage.

Requirements for the project include erosion control, provisions for stormwater management and security measures. The board will require Montpelier to do a follow-up traffic study a year after the project is finished.

Mayor Anne Watson praised the board’s decision. Watson says downtown Montpelier will be a “more vibrant place with all the property improvements.”

Some residents have criticized the development, arguing that it’s too expensive to clean up contaminated soil at the site.

The project must now clear an Act 250 land use review.
