WEST DOVER, Vt. (AP) - Heads are turning on Route 100, wondering what’s Between the Buns.

“We were going to call it Dank Franks,” Alex Pfeiffer, co-owner of the food truck, said Thursday after six days of being open on property in front of Layla’s Riverside Lodge.

Wanting to offer more than hotdogs, Pfeiffer and co-owner Michael Unterberg went with Between the Buns, a name recommended by their roommate. So far, the customers seem to enjoy the play on words.

“It adds some comedic value to things,” said Pfeiffer, who’s planning to have t-shirts and stickers made with the truck’s logo.

The truck sells hotdogs, chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, BLTs, jalapeno poppers and french fries. Pfeiffer said the plan is to start with a limited menu. He anticipates having soup and weekly specials soon.

Pfeiffer and Unterberg came from Allentown, Penn., about three years ago to live the ski and snowboard lifestyle. Pfeiffer said they were looking to find “a good way of life without being part of the rat race.”

“I think we figured it out,” he said, having bought the food truck from Vince Rice in May.

Rice, a Wilmington Select Board member and MOOver bus driver, ran the business in Wilmington. The truck was moved to West Dover to be closer to the Mount Snow ski resort and because a growing number of food trucks were popping up in Wilmington.

Pfeiffer said the only quick and easy options in West Dover are at 7-Eleven and Snow Mountain Market. The hope is to get local workers, skiers and snowboarders passing through the Route 100 corridor. Unterberg said he would like to sneak in some runs on the hill himself when he gets the chance.

A snowmobile trail goes through the property. Riders can stop and park near the truck.

The owners said the project is permitted in town and they have a food vending license from the state.

“Sandy helped us out a lot,” Pfeiffer said, referring to Sandy MacDougall, owner of Layla’s.

MacDougall offered his kitchen up for prepping the food. Unterberg said Dover Zoning Administrator Tabi Freedman also was helpful in getting the food truck open.

Unterberg said he was “super, super happy” about the experience. While he and Pfeiffer have never professionally been involved in the food industry, they have done a lot of personal cooking at home.

“It’s exciting to get into because it’s something I’ve never done,” Pfeiffer said. “It’s only going to get better from here.”
