BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Four hundred people took part in a Wreaths Across America event in Bennington this week.

The Saturday event was part of a national observance, coordinated with wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery alongside 1,400 other locations in nationwide, at sea and abroad. The Bennington Banner reports 489 wreaths were placed at veterans’ graves at the cemetery of the Vermont Veterans’ Home.

Vermont Veterans’ Home Chief Operating Officer Col. Al Faxon says the purpose of the event is to commemorate the dedication of veterans to the United States.

Faxon says that the wreaths were purchased with funds raised by Amy Maroney, whose father served in the 173rd Airborne in Vietnam
