Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez announced Thursday that there will be a total of 12 debates in the upcoming election cycle — with the first six coming essentially once a month starting in June 2019.
The announcement noted that the first two debates may need to span multiple nights because of the high number of anticipated primary contenders.
More details on that what a candidate needs to qualify for the debates will come early next year.
While no Democrat has formally committed to a presidential bid, several prominent members of the party have signaled their interest in running.
Recent polling shows that former Vice President Joseph R. Biden; Sen. Bernard Sanders, Vermont independent; and outgoing Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas are currently the top favorites in the upcoming primary battles.
