SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Police in Oregon say a couple has been arrested after they enclosed 35 cats into a U-Haul for three days with no food or water. Three of the felines died.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that 52-year-old Richard Kleimeier and his 46-year-old wife Jenny Kleimeier were booked for multiple counts of animal neglect.

Richard Kleimeier works for the city of Salem and his wife works for the state.

The sheriff’s office says the cats were kept inside laundry baskets which were zip-tied together to keep them sealed in.

The Willamette Humane Society helped take the surviving cats for treatment of various ailments.

The Kleimeiers were taken to jail and later released. A court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 18.
