PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine court has issued a three-year suspension for the law license of a failed Republican district attorney candidate who’s been accused of sexual misconduct.

Superior Court Justice Thomas Warren ordered last week that attorney Seth Carey of Auburn should also undergo treatment for personality disorder. The Thursday ruling said Carey should work with a licensed psychiatrist.

Maine Public reports that judge found Carey violated professional conduct rules this year by engaging in unlawful sexual touching and assault, failing to comply with a previous suspension order and witness tampering.

Attorney Jim Howaniec said Carey is deciding whether to appeal. He said Carey denies sexual assault allegations.

The Board of Overseers of the bar pushed for disbarment instead. Howaniec said Carey had lapses of judgment due to untreated mental health issues.
