ARLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont high school teacher who led her students to create a hydraulic cardboard octopus model and a robotic hand has been named the state science teacher of the year.

Arlington Memorial High School teacher Karen Schroeder received the honor from the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering. The Bennington Banner reports the academy honors teachers statewide for serving as role models for their colleagues and improving science education.

Schroeder says the award prompted her to apply for a grant from the academy. She was awarded $800 and plans to use it to help fund robotics projects.

She says this is her first teaching award, and she has been teaching for nine years.
