Virginia men’s basketball defeated Georgia Tech 65-54 Wednesday, and in the process clinched the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament in March and at least a share of the ACC regular season title.
The conference tournament doesn’t tip off till March 6, but the Cavaliers now know they will play their first game Thursday, March 8, at noon Eastern.
Virginia is 14-1 in the ACC (25-2 overall) with three regular season games to play, starting with lowly Pittsburgh and finishing with Louisville and Notre Dame. The next closest team in the standings is Duke, 11-4 in ACC action. Even if Duke were to win out and Virginia were to lose out, they would finish tied — and Virginia owns the head-to-head tiebreaker for beating the Blue Devils 65-63 last month.
“This is the third one in five years as the ACC regular champion. That is not lost on me and all the players that I have been blessed to coach,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said after the game. “This group, I told them, ’You are trying to do something special, and it is not going to be handed to you.’ “
The tournament will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
