LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) - Suburban Denver residents have been asked to stay inside and some schools have been placed on tighter security as authorities investigate a report of shots fired.

Deputies are searching the area in and around a shopping center Friday morning but the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said it hasn’t been able to confirm yet whether any shots were fired. It urged people to have patience and stay inside and to avoid driving in the area.

Television footage showed a number of deputies in the area, including at least one a rooftop.

No one is being allowed into and out of seven schools in the area because of the police activity. School officials told parents who haven’t already dropped of their children for the day to stay home.
