MILTON, Wis. (AP) - At least one neighborhood in a southern Wisconsin town remains under water from this week’s heavy rain.

Sixteen neighbors in Rock County can’t drive in or out of the cul-de-sac where they live because of deep water and ice pooling into an intersection.

Rural residents in another subdivision between Janesville and Milton were stranded from floodwaters on Thursday.

Resident Charla Piper told the Janesville Gazette her children had to hike over a hill to dry ground in order to catch the bus to school. She says approximately 12 homes in the neighborhood are trapped and that there are no signs warning of the high water. Piper was told the county ran out of signs.

“If someone hits that water tonight, they’re going to go under,” Piper said. “They’re going to be under water before they know it.”

The county had sent a plow through the water of a nearby road to break up the ice forming over the top, but the water rushed back into the street.

Two days after the rain stopped, water was still pouring into Piper’s basement. She said it’s inconvenient but manageable.

Piper contacted the county Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Bureau to confirm they’re working on a plan, but the office didn’t specify details.

The newspaper was unable to acquire a list of roads closed by flooding.

Another iced-over pond covers a road southeast of Milton, where a lone driver had to be rescued by local firefighters after driving into the water. No one was injured.

According to the State Department of Transportation, part of Highway 51 in Edgerton remained closed Thursday. Janesville officials reported Wednesday that all streets closed due to flooding had been reopened.
