Sen. Ben Cardin said Thursday that the Republican memo concerning alleged abuses the Department of Justice, as well the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, are all meant to compromise the integrity of the agency.

“It’s a distraction from trying to compromise the independence and integrity of the Department of Justice and the Mueller investigation, and I hope everyone will recognize that no one is above the law, that Congress has a responsibility to make sure the Department of Justice maintains it’s independence and ability to operate as an independent agency,” Mr. Cardin, Maryland Democrat, said on CNN.

He said Republicans want to discredit the agency due to the ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign over alleged collusion claims.

The Republican memo says political research was used to grant a surveillance warrant on some Mr. Trump’s campaign aides, but Democrats say that’s a selective interpretation of the documents. The Democratic memo has not been released yet.
