PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s congressional delegation is opposed to any effort to pursue offshore drilling off the coast in the wake of the Trump administration’s announcement in favor of expanding the practice.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has announced a drilling plan that could open new areas of oil and gas exploration off the East Coast. Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, independent Sen. Angus King, Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin and Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree are sponsoring the New England Coastal Protection Act against drilling.

The senators say they oppose drilling off Maine “or any proximate area” because it could negatively impact the state’s fisheries, environment and coastal industries. They say “even a minor spill could damage irreparably the ecosystem in the Gulf of Maine.”

They say drilling would also hurt tourism.
