CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia’s Department of Agriculture says it has awarded grants to 36 projects to spay and neuter animals.

Department officials say they received 60 applications for more than $1 million in funding.

According to the department, the program was established in 2013 but wasn’t funded until a bill was passed by the Legislature and signed into law last year.

The grants are intended to offer spay and neuter services at the county level. Eligible applicants included county or municipal shelters, animal control agencies and non-governmental nonprofits incorporated in West Virginia.

The list of recipients is online at https://agriculture.wv.gov/divisions/executive/Documents/2018%20WV%20Spay.pdf
