A Richmond man originally charged with manslaughter in the deadly beating of his 76-year-old father has been convicted of aggravated assault.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Maine Superior Court Justice Daniel Billings on Wednesday sentenced 55-year-old Kurt Linton to serve an initial year in jail.
Linton’s father Malcolm Linton died Feb. 22, 2017 at a hospital in Augusta.
One of Linton’s attorneys, David Paris, said Linton understood the impact it would have for his family to go through a trial. Paris called Linton’s sentence a “very favorable outcome.”
Linton had told police that he punched his father defending himself.
The remainder of the eight-year-term is suspended while Linton faces three years on probation.
Linton is now at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.
