JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - An Alaska marine scientist severely injured in a December traffic crash has died.

Juneau radio station KTOO reports 54-year-old Michelle Ridgway died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a crash Friday afternoon at Mile 22 Glacier Highway.

Her heavily damaged vehicle was found overturned in a ditch. Ridgway was on the ground nearby.

She was rushed to Bartlett Regional Hospital and then flown to Harborview Medical Center.

Ridgway was an avid diver who helped explore the Bering Sea’s Zhemchug (ZEM-chug) Canyon and took part in research in other Alaska locations. She also directed science camps for children.

The deputy director of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Auke Bay Laboratories, Pete Hagen, says Ridgeway was impassioned about what she did and she was an excellent communicator.
