CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) - Girls in Massachusetts are taking part in their first official event as members of the Boy Scouts: a miniature car race.

Pack 45 in Chelmsford says five new female members have built small wooden cars that they’ll race against other scouts on Saturday afternoon in the organization’s annual Pinewood Derby competition.

The girls range from kindergarten age to 4th grade age and are part of the pack’s Cub Scout unit. They’ve joined the organization this month following the Boy Scouts of America’s decision last year to allow girls into the traditionally all-boys social organization starting in 2018.

The Chelmsford pack says the policy change will help young girls and boys learn to treat all people with respect and empathy. Saturday’s race takes place at the Central Congregational Church.
