PITTSBURGH (AP) - Investigators plan to review body camera footage and witness statements after a man was wounded by Pittsburgh police while running away from officers.
Pittsburgh police said 34-year-old Dontay Green was shot in the leg once around 5:30 p.m. Sunday after the officer said Green displayed a gun while fleeing questioning for a nearby assault. Green was taken to a hospital and remained there Monday in stable condition.
A power outage in the neighborhood had brought a lot of residents outside and several witnessed the confrontation between Green and police. A man who was on the porch with Green told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Green was running away with his hands in the air just before he was shot.
Several witnesses gave conflicting statements to reporters and police including whether Green had raised his hands and whether they had heard a gunshot prior to the police officer firing his weapon.
The incident comes just a month after an unarmed black teenager was fatally shot in the back by a police officer in the Pittsburgh suburb of East Pittsburgh while he was fleeing a traffic stop. The incident sparked protests that shut down an interstate and spilled into Pittsburgh proper for days.
The officer in the June shooting, Michael Rosfeld, was indicted on a criminal homicide charge in the shooting death of Antwon Rose Jr. Rosfeld’s attorney has said he maintains the shooting was justified.
Authorities have not released the name of the officer involved in Sunday night’s shooting.
Police responded to an initial call Sunday of an assault. The injured man, who had been pistol whipped, identified Green as his attacker.
The officers said Green, who was standing on a nearby porch, fled as the officers attempted to question him.
The officer said Green ran between two cars, showed a gun tucked in the back of his waistband and threw it away.
Green faces numerous charges, including three counts of aggravated assault. It wasn’t known Monday if he’s retained an attorney.
