PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Both U.S. senators from Rhode Island are criticizing President Donald Trump’s comments about Russian election meddling.

Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse issued a statement Monday after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at a joint news conference in Finland calling Trump’s comments “deeply unnerving.”

Democratic Sen. Jack Reed said Trump’s deference to Putin will lead to more Russian interference and cyber-aggression. Reed said at times, Trump “sounded more like Putin’s press agent” than U.S. president.

Trump didn’t strongly condemn the interference efforts, which U.S. intelligence agencies insist did occur, including hacking of Democratic emails, the subject of last week’s indictment of 12 Russians.

Facing withering bipartisan criticism, Trump says the two superpowers “must get along.”

Whitehouse says both parties should come together to protect American institutions, including the law enforcement and intelligence communities.
