PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - An embattled Providence city councilman has been cleared to run for re-election.

Richard Thornton, who serves as the Rhode Island Board of Elections’ campaign finance director, confirmed Wednesday that Councilman Luis Aponte had been cleared but added that he still owes the state $49,429 in fines for missing campaign finance reports. Aponte has failed to file his four most recent reports.

The Democrat still faces embezzlement charges that prompted him to step down as the council’s president last year. Prosecutors say Aponte embezzled funds from his campaign account. He has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Aponte agreed to pay $1,500 earlier this year to settle an ethics complaint concerning his vote to rezone a property owned by his former landlord.
