HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters is funding a new super political action committee in support of a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.

The super PAC Be Change Now launched a series of television advertisements over the weekend in support of state Sen. Josh Green in his run for lieutenant governor, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Tuesday.

The council endorsed Green last month. Green is the only candidate the super PAC is supporting for now, but it could choose to back other candidates later, Be Change Now said in an email Monday.

Be Change Now filed with the state Campaign Spending Commission in late April. It is not required to file its first spending report until August. The state commission defines super PACS as independent expenditure committees.

Under federal law, supers PAC are allowed unlimited spending to advocate for or against candidates. Super PACs cannot give candidates direct contributions or coordinate with campaigns.

Green said he had not yet seen any of the ads run by Be Change Now, but he learned of the group’s support over the weekend.

“I’m running my own campaign independently, which is the right thing to do,” Green said.

Green is facing several high-profile candidates for Democratic nomination in the primary in August, including Kauai County Mayor Bernard Carvalho, state Sen. Will Espero, state Sen. Jill Tokuda and former state Board of Education member Kim Coco Iwamoto.
