TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Bob Hugin says the White House policy that results in the separation of families at the southern border is “unacceptable.”
Hugin said in a statement on Tuesday that the policy should be stopped immediately. He was responding to a pastor who called on him to denounce the policy.
Hugin is running against incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez. Menendez has called the policy immoral and cruel.
The policy has come under fire from elected officials.
Under it, all unlawful crossings are referred for prosecution, a process that moves adults to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and sends many children to facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their families over six weeks earlier this year.
