GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - Against the advice of state preservationists, Grants Pass officials are going ahead with a plan to replace a 77-year-old sign that beckons motorists to the Redwood Highway.
Originally erected by a consortium of tourism interests from Grants Pass to San Francisco, the Redwood Empire sign sits at the entrance of the Caveman Bridge.
The city wants to replace the aging metal sign with one that would note Grants Pass as the “Gateway to the Redwood Empire.”
The Daily Courier newspaper reports a consensus to replace the sign has been reached, but a date for a final council vote has not been set.
Councilman Roy Lindsay says: “The past is important, but attitudes are changing and we want to be fresh and new.”
