PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - Firefighters have rescued a 2-year-old boy from being crushed under giant slabs of stone in New Hampshire.

Police say the boy became trapped in the rock pile around 5:30 p.m. Friday in Portsmouth.

The boy was playing on the rocks with his grandfather when a stone he was standing on became dislodged. The boy fell forward, and the rock he had been standing on came to rest on his head.

The stone slabs were being stored in the yard as foundation for a seawall under construction and each weighed several hundred pounds.

Police and firefighters took about nine minutes to rescue the boy in what officials described as a highly delicate operation.

The boy has been hospitalized with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
