FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts firefighters have helped rescue eight people and revived a dog that passed out during a fire at an apartment building.

First responders were called to the fire in Fall River at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fall River fire inspector Paul Cote says inspectors were already inside the building when the blaze began and were able to alert residents.

Cote tells The Boston Globe residents might not have known about the fire otherwise, because the building’s smoke detectors weren’t working.

Firefighters pulled a family’s pet pit bull from the apartment and used CPR to revive the unconscious animal.

The dog was transported to a veterinarian for further treatment. A second dog died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
