GARY, Ind. (AP) - A Gary councilwoman is giving up a second job with the city’s sanitary district after a judge ruled her dual employment goes against Indiana law.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that Lake Superior Court Judge John M. Sedia ruled against Councilwoman Mary Brown in a lawsuit she filed to keep her two jobs. Her attorney said Monday that she will resign from the sanitary district.

State officials had been trying to stop Brown from being paid by the district in addition to her salary as a City Council member.

They say Brown violated a law prohibiting elected officials from being employees of the government agencies they oversee.

Indiana’s database of employee compensation lists Brown as receiving more than $99,700 in 2015. Other Gary City Council members earn about $29,000 annually.
