BOSTON (AP) - Fire officials are investigating what caused an alarm to go off and spur a hazmat response.

A 12-story commercial building in the city’s Financial district was evacuated Wednesday afternoon for what fire officials are calling “an unknown chemical release.”

Officials say five people, including three firefighters, have been taken to hospitals for medical evaluations. Their conditions aren’t immediately available.

Around 200 people were evacuated from the building.

The department’s hazmat team was initially alerted after an alarm on the building’s fifth floor went off.

Fire Department spokesman Marc Sanders says a strange odor was making people feel ill. The hazmat team is working to determine whether the odor was caused by a chemical spill.
