GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.

The Delta Democrat-Times reports that 23-year-old Demarcus Powell of Greenville was arrested Friday.

Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant says authorities believe Powell shot a marked Greenville police car that was patrolling the city Thursday night. Two officers were in the car, and neither was hurt. Merchant says the car was struck.

Powell was being held in the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility. It was not immediately clear whether he is represented by an attorney.
