MILWAUKEE (AP) - Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Milwaukee to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the few cars that made it through downtown Milwaukee’s Wisconsin Avenue on Saturday honked in support.

State Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa, a Milwaukee Democrat, urged demonstrators to stand with immigrants detained at the border. Gabriela Riveros, a protester from St. Francis, urged the government to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reunify families and respect immigrants because “they are the ones who built this country.”

Earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters marched in Shorewood, north of Milwaukee. Erin Cassidente, of Menomonee Falls, says she believes it’s “utter cruelty to separate children from their parents.”

Rallies were also expected in other cities across the state.
