RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 38-year-old Sparks man convicted of driving drunk in a crash that killed a newly engaged couple two years ago has been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
Richard Fuentes Jr. was sentenced to two consecutive 20-year terms on Tuesday for the April 2016 deaths of Janeth Gonzalez-Contreras and Saul Garcia, both 30. Prosecutors say he’ll have to serve 14 years before he’s eligible for parole.
Police say Fuentes was going 88 mph when he sped past a red light and collided with the couple’s car in Reno at the intersection of Mill Street and Rock Boulevard. Their car flipped over and landed on its roof in a ditch.
The victims’ families testified the crash forced them to change their wedding plans to funeral preparations.
