Sen. Pat Toomey said Thursday that he’d like to bring his bill on background checks for firearms to the floor and allow amendments to be debated.
“Joe Manchin and I are definitely going to move forward if we can. We are actively soliciting support for our bill. There are several Republican senators, who voted against it in 2013, who have told me they’re reconsidering,” Mr. Toomey, Pennsylvania Republican, said on MSNBC.
His bill, written along with Sen. Joe Manchin, West Virginia Democrat, would expand background checks to cover commercial gun sales as well as those purchased online or at gun shows. The measure did not pass in 2013 when it was originally proposed, falling short by six votes.
“Then let’s put it on the Senate floor and let’s have lots of amendments and everybody can have their idea litigated and let the Senate work its will,” Mr. Toomey said.
Mr. Machin said he thinks their bill can pass this time because people have confidence that President Trump will not come after their gun rights.
“There is a president today that could make this happen,” he said on Fox News.
