SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality is expected to begin work this summer to clean up the area around a contaminated former power plant in the northern part of the state.
The Sheridan Press reported Friday the site in Acme, about 17 miles north of Sheridan, has asbestos, lead paint, petroleum, carcinogens and other hazardous waste.
Contaminants are in the soil, groundwater and buildings.
The site is now owned by the Sheridan County Conservation District and is enrolled in the Department of Environmental Quality’s voluntary remediation program.
Interns from Yale University will help complete a website for updates on the project and information on how to donate.
The project has already received more than $200,000 through state and federal programs, foundation grants, private donations and other sources.
